Without being a tourist trip, Auroville exerts a powerful attraction for travelers visiting the border region between Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Its name means "City of Dawn" and is a community supported and encouraged by the Government of India and UNESCO, to experience a new style of international life: here is home to about 2000 people from 40 countries in over a hundred villages scattered throughout Auroville.
Auroville opened in 1968 at the behest of the Mother of Sri Aurobindo Ashram in an inaugural function attended by representatives of 124 nations and all states of India. Since then the world looks at life expectations Auroville the realization of the ideal of unity in diversity, while being investigated on education, health and a sustainable lifestyle.
Auroville is only 150 km Chennai the former Madras and 10 km from Pondicherry. It is very easy to reach by taxi or bus from either of these two cities, arrive at a town rural atmosphere, which occupies an area of 25 km2 in which there are around one hundred villages. With its tropical climate, the monsoon season begins in mid-October and runs through mid-December.
The first impression of Auroville is a strange, living a hard and challenging experiment between people who want to make the impossible possible. In fact, many people come and ask where Auroville is ... and are in the center of the city! Is that here they will find temples or anything that traditionally expecting a tourist visiting the India.
It is best to start with the Visitor Center where you will find information available in several languages, exhibitions, an orientation video, and retail as a crafts center, library and Info-Café. It is open every day from 9 to 17.30 h. There is also a picnic area.
If the idea is to stay, you will find several guest houses, the busiest periods are between December and March and between August and September so if they travel on these dates, must make reservations in advance. Amenities can be basic, standard good or autonomous.
During his stay in Auroville can simply enjoy the beach and forest, part of a study group of Savitri Bhavan, revelatory epic of Sri Aurobindo or access to health treatment in the Healing Center Reserved. There are also yoga, riding school, library and volunteer work.
