The University of Mumbai is in the district of Maharashtra and was established in 1857, in a beautiful complex of buildings of Gothic architecture, is one of the hundred best universities in the world and is easily reached by public transport or taxis in the city.

The building University of Mumbai is called Venetian Gothic style, greatly influenced by English architecture. It is in Bhaurao Patil Road, just off the Supreme Court Justice. It was designed by architect Sir Gilbert Scott and construction was funded by Cowasji Jehangir, a Parsi philanthropist, whose name was given in gratitude, to the Meeting Room of the University.

One of the biggest attractions is its clock-tower 260 feet high, adorned with oriental figures. The carillon, in ancient times, played tunes such as Rule Britannia, God save the king, Auld Lang Syne and a Handel symphony among 16 songs that changed four times a day, now only gives the chimes the quarter hours with the same sounds that Big Ben. The assembly formed by the clock tower and the stunning Library began construction in 1869 and completed in 1878, are considered one of the historic structures that are in better condition and still in use in Mumbai.

The buildings are notable for their excellent construction, decorative friezes animal and plant motifs and the magnificent stained glass windows. In the late twentieth century restoration work had to be made involving the whole community and became a reference point for future conservation projects Mumbai.
