In 1899, the Marquess Curzon of Kedleston, as he was viceroy of India, wrote a detailed history of Government House, a book of five hundred pages which is an enormous cultural heritage, the result of many years of study and research.

The design of the Government House in Calcutta, now Kolkata, is an adaptation of Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, which had been built by an ancestor of Lord Curzon in 1759 designed by famous architect Robert Adam. This house was famous for its decoration and the beauty of his style, but what prompted Lord Curzon was its adaptability to the tropical climate of India.

The Government House was built between 1799 and 1803, has the schema of a central body with large curved corridors radiating from the four corners, allowing air circulation. It is completely built of bricks covered with white plaster, and has large terraces on the south side. It is a building with three floors, and curved corridors give a dramatic presence, each of the wings separated by a curved corridors house itself.

The interior is magnificent. It has a hall of marble columns and a small breakfast room and another for eating on the north side, while the Throne Room is located on the south side. In the north-west wing are the rooms that were used by Prince Edward of Wales when he visited Calcutta in 1921.

The east wing is the Council Chamber, where he also served the Legislative Council and currently only used for large gatherings. The East Wing rooms are painted blue and brown, were reserved for visits of elders and were used by the Prince of Wales when he visited Calcutta in 1876. In the northwest is a stairway that was decorated with oil portraits of various governors from 1862 to 1895, when the viceroy left Bengal took them, but then placed replicas of those who had lived in the residence and had more influence on historical facts. The Marble Hall consists of a central nave, separated by pillars of the aisles in the Roman court model, is used as a high State and holds a hundred people.

Raj Bhavan is not only a leading rich heritage of India, is an ancient symbol of imperial power was used for twenty-three governors until the capital of India became New Delhi in 1912. It has acres of magnificent gardens, and gate of wrought iron design features an intricate crowned by lions. Do not forget to visit the library and archives, which are saved with modern editions, seven thousand books manuscripts.
