The Fort St. George, in the city of Chennai, has a long history. It was the first of the British forts to be built in Indian Territory. The ancient city of Madras, in fact, was deployed around him, growing out of that axis.
The construction was carried out between 1640 and 1653, although the structure was rebuilt later in 1783. For a long time, this fort was a vital stronghold of the British to expand their power over the region. Named after the saint who is celebrated on the day it ended to be built first.
As a defensive midfielder and attack, the fort was also home to many famous people, and was visited by many others. Thomas Pitt, Elihu Yale, Robert Clive and Lord Cornwallis are some of the names of people who saw parading within its walls. But look at what's inside.
Upon joining the Fort St. George, you can see a vast collection of objects from the colonial period of India. They are mostly of British origin, although there are some French antiques.
One of the monuments that remain in good condition is the Church of Santa Maria. The works for construction began in 1678 and were completed about two and a half years later. Noted for its beautiful marble pieces and that around it house the tombs of some of the personalities who lived there.
The Clive House is another place to visit. This is the residence in which Robert Clive and his wife stayed in 1753. It has wooden floors and staircases and high ceilings, while the central room on the first floor is notable for its breadth and for its beautiful Corinthian columns.
