Bikaner is a city in the state of Rajasthan in western India and was the capital of the former native state of the same name. This city was founded in 1486 by Rao Bika and has undergone dramatic changes when passing from a small population to be the third largest city in the state.
A Bikaner can be reached by train from New Delhi, Jaipur, Bombay, Agra and most important cities in India. You can also get there by car from New Delhi on the tracks that come from Shekawati or Jaipur, which are in very good condition, but some may be a bit dirty.
If you arrive by plane the nearest airport is Jodhpur, Which is about 4 ½ hours, and has good road and rail connections. However, reaching Jaipur, Which is about 6 hours from Bikaner, has a great advantage and the frequency of flights and the variety of airlines, so it can be cheaper and better. Do not forget to inform it about the possibilities of transport in travel agencies when they visit.
To get around the city of Bikaner options are somewhat limited, mostly because there are only Trishaws and Tonga, Which are cars pulled by horses, because the streets are very narrow and busy. But the advantage is that your rent is not expensive and can be made for days. And for those who prefer can also rent bicycles.
Among the most interesting places to see in Bikaner is the Junagarh fort, which was built by Raja Rai Singh, who made it to house the royal family. There he gets to know all about the history of the royal family of this city and see some weapons and ornaments of the time.
One of the most visited and popular among tourists is the Laxmi Niwas Palace used to be the residence of King's former state of Bikaner and was designed by British architect Sir Samuel Swinton Jacob. Today this palace is a luxury hotel and extraordinary red sandstone was built in which adds a fabulous.
We also recommend visiting the Lalgarh Palace, Which has some resemblance to the Laxmi Niwas, perhaps because it is also built in red sandstone and was designed by the architect. Inside you can see great columns, elaborate fireplaces and decorated with Italian influence. Though the Bikaner royal family still lives in the palace, some turned into a hotel.
